Jazzy B-trayal | #OpBoycottBadal

A consistent trend within Punjab politics has been to utilize the influence of celebrities and singers in an attempt to promote a political agenda to sway voters. For example, The People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) has extensively leveraged Bhagwant Mann, who is also a candidate, to consolidate support for their party, even going as far as having him produce a song to persuade a much younger voter base by releasing his own version of the hit Tamil song, Kolaveri Di (You can view it here).

Although, it can be argued that this is part of the political game, the latest celebrity to be exploited by a political party is of great concern.  A recent endorsement that has been used as an instrument to spew party propaganda has added an additional element to this emerging phenomenon.  Jazzy B, an internationally known Punjabi singer has crossed into dangerous territories when he recently came out in support of the SAD-BJP party, despite the fact that he is not running as a candidate in the current election.

Jazzy B has spent numerous years in Canada and cannot claim ignorance.  As a celebrity who has grown up primarily in Canada, he is not a product of Indian propaganda and should be well aware of the problematic nature of what he has done.

To elaborate on this, Jazzy B was exposed to the very same issues many of us in the diaspora have been, growing up.  For example, in the aftermath of the 1984 Sikh Genocide,  Jazzy B felt the way many of us do today and even released a socially conscious album alongside Moranwali Dhadhi Jatha, in which he discusses the false encounters and illegal detentions committed by the Punjab Police  against the Sikh youth in their attempt to exterminate the community. (Listen here)

However, in an appalling move, he has since come out in support of the Shirmoni Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP alliance), as can be seen from this video, which indicates a change in attitude or revelation of  his true intent.

So we ask:

Jazzy B-trayal, if you are aware of even a single component of the genocide, you should know one of the master minds and architects of the illegal detentions and false encounters that you refer to in your track is Sumedh Saini, who also happens to be a key ally of  Parkash Singh Badal (who has even been offered a promotion should they secure their victory in this election).

In addition,  you should be aware that the BJP is a radical Hindutva organization that is known for their attempt to distort Sikh philosophy and history in an attempt to devoid the Panth of its sovereignty. Including, launching vicious assaults such as the massacre at Harminder Sahib in June of 1984 with the support of its federal leader, L. K. Advani.

So why is that if you are aware, that you have endorsed the SAD-BJP Political alliance that additionally supports numerous Deras and Babbey that break Ekta in the Panth and manipulate the masses for their hidden political agenda?

Well, we don’t expect to get an answer, so we’ll assume that  Jazzy B-trayal has caved into the peer pressure of many other Punjabi singers.  It is unfortunate, but true that he is not the only celebrity to support the BJP-SAD alliance; Harbhajan Mann has also come out in support, much earlier than him.Well, we don’t expect to get an answer, so we’ll assume that  Jazzy B-trayal has caved into the peer pressure of many other Punjabi singers.  It unfortunate, but true that he is not the only celebrity to support the BJP-SAD alliance; Harbhajan Mann has also come out in support, and Hans Raj Hans did as well.

Sad isn’t it? What do we do you may ask? Well, as we await the results of the 2012 election, we shouldn’t let our  memories fade, when supporters of the Badal Regime come to our local concert halls seeking our dollars, we should seize the opportunity and send our message loud and clear.  As supporters and lovers of peace and human rights, our money will not be given to actors in Badals Natakentitled “The Demise of Punjab”.

Jazzy B, the famous crappy ugly punjabi singer from vancouver, who now all of a sudden acts like he’s so “British” is embarrassing.

From his hair to his teeth to his style or dress & his dance moves, he is not only a horrendous “artist” but he is inconsiderate, greedy, and retarded. Politicians will sink to any low, and they already obviously have in India, but when so called “celebrities” (btw jazzy b, harbhajan mann, and hans raj hans all have strong canada links, i think they might all be citizens of this country, jazzy b’s story most people know, but harbhajan mann was an unknown artist in the 80s and his wedding was even in Toronto during the 80s, he’s lived here for a while, also, hans raj hans frequently visits canada because he has a brother who lives here, who has a little gang of friends and they sing at peoples weddings, yes there trying to bring these trends to canada, annoying singers at weddings, also i believe his wife owns a business in malton, a beauty salon….)…so when these singers who themselves do not spend that much time in punjab but sing songs about it and make videos as if their life is all about punjab, really don’t care about punjab, especially true punjabi culture (btw has anyone ever seen that harbhajan mann movie called asanu mann something when he’s in some town in alberta singing on a university campus, pretending he’s 20 years old and these hip hop dancers pop out of nowhere and start breaking out some moves? LOL, please youtube it!!!)…..o god i can’t even finish my rant…. anyways my main point is that there all a bunch of scumbags who would lick anyone’s shoe to get some money $$$$$ and power….btw i always considered JASWINDER bans to be a sellout!

although i do not support manpreet badal, i think bhagwant mann’s a different story because he’s been doing this for awhile and through his comedy he’s always looked at punjabi politicians with a critical eye…hes more of an activist and community involved person in comparison to the above mentioned singers, also, bhagwant mann, as a comedian/occasional actor, etc., has to work harder and be more creative whereas these singers just sing whatever their told and make lots of money..bhagwant mann probably also has money but i don’t think he would easily just endorse ANY political candidate, perhaps I’m wrong i don’t know

We cannot leave the future of Punjab and Sikhs to singers and actors. It is a sad story.

a rare video about police torture in punjab ^^^^^

this is only part of the documentary

Don’t compare Bhagwant Mann with these singers. He is a hard core political activist who has put his career on old and is full time working for PPP. He has always been socially conscious even in his comedy and singing. In fact it is admirable that he is putting his money/career where his mouth is and not just paying lip service…

  10. N Dhaliwal February 7, 2012 at 11:47 pm

Bhagwant Mann cannot be brought into this whole situation from the time he started his career he has ranted and raved about dirty politics in punjab and about the dirty things they do. knowing him personally will only let you understand how this man thinks, ever since he was 16 he wanted to bring change into punjabi politics and now was his chance to stand with the right political party and make a difference. Yes, he might spend a month with his family in Seattle once a year but at the end of the day this Mann does live in Punjab.

  11. Sim Nona February 8, 2012 at 12:52 am

There is no comparison being made; Bhagwant Mann is only being used as an example to illustrate celebrities that are used by Political Parties. I do agree a comparison would not be fair, and Bhagwant Mann is also a candidate which is a huge difference.

harbhajjan mann is related to Ramouwalia, who actually ditched his lok palai party and joined back into akali dal in the recent punjab elections.

you can also see harbhajjan mann supporting ramouwalia’s campaign, in this video:

  14. MISS KAUR March 29, 2012 at 8:36 pm

i honestly believe if it wasnt for this blog and people tweeting about JAZZy bans promoting badal, he would have never made the rajoana video…hes trying to gain back some “respect” and dignity…well jazzy i sill think your music sucks and in my eyes you always were a loser but smart move in making the video, you douchebag

  15. Karen March 27, 2014 at 11:16 pm

Actually feel disgusted with Jazzy-B! After gaining respect for addressing the issues of the Sikh Genocide 1984 in tracks like Sadda Haq. For him now to have taken a complete U-turn is despicable.

He has in the past made out like he has strong sentiments and understands the hardships faced by Sikhs in Punjab and Badals role in that. Even releasing statements emphasizing NeverForget1984.

Now he has proved himself as a complete FAKE by supporting Badal. And painting a rosy picture of Punjab when in fact the truth is very ugly.

Jazzy B-etraly should be ashamed of himself!
